Tong Road Improvements

Prior to tarring roads, the water cart was used to lay the dust in dry weather.

There were some very strong hard-working women here in the village. One woman was very enterprising, and she started to move boulders along the shoreline to open what is now the road between Tong and Upper Coll. 

Before then the bus would only get as far as Tong and the people would have to walk to the other villages. 

Kenny Maclennan ( Buller) was very good at planning. Shortly after he left school he got the village boys to widen the cart track at the back of the village. This was In order to make the track wide enough for a lorry to get near to the peat banks. What used to take 3 days taking the peats from there to the village by cart, we could get the same amount of peat home by lorry in an hour or two.
